Hospital Bed Mattresses & Overlays

Mattresses used to be a simple thing but they're not any more. I'm not going to be writing about your average store bought mattress that you can buy at any furniture store. The mattresses I'm going to write about are the ones that, while not exclusive to home health care companies, are sold primarily by home health care companies. Mattress manufacturers will talk for days about the features and benefits of their products but I don't want to bore anyone to death so I'm only going to cover the basics of each type starting at the low end and working up to the high end..

Mattresses are all designed for the same purpose but the needs of the person who will be laying on them will dictate which are the best to purchase. A very basic mattress needs to simply provide comfort for the majority of people. A high end mattress has to provide comfort and pressure relief for people who are at risk of pressure sores if using a basic mattress. There are a few types of products to achieve comfort and pressure relief including, but not limited to, air mattresses,  foam mattresses, gel mattress overlays and foam mattress overlays. Really, any substance which will disperse weight over a larger area of the skin surface will reduce the severity of pressure serves.

Mattress overlays are products which are designed to be fitted on top of an existing mattress to increase the comfort and pressure relieving qualities of the mattress. They are usually less expensive than replacement mattresses but are also less effective.

Replacement mattresses are complete mattress systems designed to replace the existing mattress on a bed and can be used on box spring, spring or solid pan beds.
