1:12 Ramp Length Calculator

The calculator provides the ramp length needed for the rise or elevation you input at a 1:12 slope.

The permanent ramp result in the calculator below meets most building and accessibility codes in Canada and the ADA requirements for the USA. The portable ramp results are based on recommendations of the portable ramp manufacturers.

For some government and commercial applications a slope of 1:15 is requested. To find the length of ramp needed please use our 1:15 slope calculator.

Be aware that many wheelchair and scooter manufacturers advise the maximum slope their products can safely negotiate. For safety, do not exceed these recommendations.

Enter the Rise (in inches):
(Vertical difference between the bottom level and top level)

Minimum Required Permanent Ramp Length
(1:12 slope, results in feet)
Suitable for wheelchair, scooter and walker users)
feet

Minimum Occupied Portable Ramp Length
(2:12 slope, results in feet):
(Wheelchair/scooter user is sitting in seat)
Ensure that the mobility device will be safe at the 2:12 (9.6°) slope.
All mobility devices have their own gradient limits.
feet

Minimum Unoccupied Portable Ramp Length
(3:12 slope, results in feet):
(Wheelchair/scooter user is NOT sitting in seat)
feet

*Please note that ramps can not have any continuous sections more than 30 feet long.

For ramps more than 30 feet long level landings must be added as needed to meet this standard (eg. A 45 foot ramp would need one landing no more than 30 feet from each end. A 90 foot ramp would need two landings 30 feet apart).

  Level turns count as landings.
